A Journey of Connection: Q&A With Charter Senior Living’s Co-Founders, Kim and Keven Bennema

Nov 25, 2024

At Charter Senior Living, the commitment to enhancing the human spirit goes beyond words – it’s a way of life. This summer, Co-Founders Kim and Keven Bennema, joined by their faithful dog, Buoy, hit the road for the “Anchor’s Away Tour of 2024.” From Florida to Wisconsin and beyond, they visited Charter Senior Living communities across the country, meeting residents, families and associates to celebrate, listen and learn.

In this Q&A, Kim and Keven reflect on their road trip experiences, share insights from the journey, and highlight how these moments are shaping the future of Charter Senior Living.

Q: What were your biggest takeaways from the “Anchor’s Away Tour of 2024”?

Keven: “This road trip was such a special experience for us. We started in May at Springwood Court in Ft. Myers, Florida, and visited countless Charter communities from there. Each stop reinforced how fortunate we are to lead a company built on care, connection and community.”

Kim: “One of our biggest takeaways was the opportunity to celebrate and appreciate our associates, residents and their families. At every stop, we were reminded that the Charter mission isn’t just about occupancy – it’s about trust, relationships, and making a meaningful difference.

This year, we also tried something new: going live on Facebook as we arrived or departed each community. The warm welcomes, often with residents and associates gathered at the door, were unforgettable moments of excitement and gratitude.”

Q: How does feedback from these visits influence Charter Senior Living’s future?

Keven: “Feedback is vital – it’s how we grow, adapt, and stay true to our mission. During the tour, we met with associates, residents and even families, attending staff huddles and lunches to have open conversations about what’s working and where we can improve.”

Kim: “Here are some ways we integrate feedback:

  1. Residents: Their insights guide enhancements to activities, dining experiences and facilities.
  2. Families: They help us understand how well we’re meeting their loved ones’ needs and expectations, offering valuable perspectives on communication and care.
  3. Staff: We focus on their feedback to address operational challenges, improve training, and foster teamwork.

This feedback directly informs strategic decisions, from day-to-day improvements like adjusting meal plans to larger initiatives like developing new programs or policies. It’s a continuous process of listening, adapting and acting to enhance the quality of life for everyone in our communities.”

Q: Your tour highlights Charter’s hands-on, personal approach. How do you maintain this connection across all locations year-round?

Keven: “We’re deeply committed to maintaining a family atmosphere, even when we can’t be everywhere at once. That’s why we’ve designed Charter Senior Living differently – without a centralized corporate office, we stay mobile and engaged, providing on-the-ground support where it’s needed most.”

Kim: “We also rely on regional collaboration and events to foster a sense of community, like the Mid-Atlantic Magic Race Team or the Awesomesauce Mad Hatters Team meetings. These gatherings bring together Executive Directors, Health and Wellness Directors, and other leaders to share best practices and build camaraderie. Additionally, we encourage family engagement through events, advisory committees and open communication. It’s all about reinforcing Charter’s mission and creating a strong, connected network.”

Q: What new initiatives are you most excited about for the coming year?

Kim: “Based on insights from our tour, we’re launching several exciting initiatives:

  1. Enhanced Wellness Programs: Our Thrive, Grow, and Flourish initiatives will offer holistic health options, from fitness classes to mindfulness workshops.
  2. Technology Integration: Tools like IN2L will help residents stay connected and engaged.
  3. Community-Building Activities: Events like prom nights, hot air balloon rides, and sip-and-paint evenings will create unforgettable moments for residents and families.
  4. Sustainability Initiatives: Projects like community gardens and recycling programs will reflect our commitment to eco-friendly living.
  5. Staff Development: We’re introducing training programs and support systems to empower our team members.

These initiatives reflect our dedication to continuous improvement and creating vibrant, supportive communities for everyone.”

Q: Can you share a story from the road that resonated with you?

Keven: “One moment that truly touched us was at The Cottages of New Lenox, where my father, Paul Bennema, lived before his passing. The care and compassion he received from the staff, and the bonds he formed with residents, embodied everything Charter stands for – dignity, love and community.

Another highlight was celebrating Fran’s 26 years as Executive Director at Springwood Court, alongside a resident’s 100th birthday and Nurses Week. Moments like these remind us why we do what we do.”

Charter Senior Living is more than a network of communities – it’s a family. As Kim and Keven continue to lead with heart, their road trip is a testament to the power of connection, the value of feedback, and the joy of celebrating life together.
